After devastating family events, Scott Trundel clings to the last remnant of his former family life an unrelenting passion for baseball. With no real athletic skills, Scott eventually embarks on a career as a baseball reporter at the turn of the millennium, when newspapers are quickly becoming relics and the information age threatens to make journalists extinct. Scott must rise above the rest to survive in the dying medium he loves.
When Scott meets Cameron Dobson, he feels an inexplicable draw to the player most others now see as unremarkable. Cam was born with velocity in his arm and notoriety in his lineage. His skill is his one way out of his rural Pennsylvania hometown, where his last name is as dreaded as his fastball. To fully realize his talent Cam must overcome a lifetime of unfulfilled expectation .
Scott and Cam meet in the purgatory that is independent league baseball. Both looking for a shot at something bigger, they can only hope someone is taking notice of them and the new baseball team in blue collar Vineland, New Jersey.

The Independents eBook Lian Skaf

I stumbled onto this book by chance when looking for a good beach/summer read. I have always been someone who romanticizes baseball and where it fits into our summer traditions. This book hit on all the things I love about the sport and touches on a lot of deeper themes outside baseball as well. I haven't read anything else by Lian Skaf but this is a solid introduction and I look forward to more down the road.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I am not very into baseball. I cared about the characters and couldn't put the book down until I found out how Scott's life panned out. I hope to have the opportunity to read another book from Mr. Skaf soon!
Great read! In-depth story with detail and insight into the lives of a couple of guys fighting for their big break. Heart warming at times, sad at other times...but always real. This book was great....can't wait for the next book by this up and coming author.
Great book with a fresh perspective.
Wow, not exactly what I thought I'd get from a book that I thought was about independent baseball!

Surprise depth and feeling...you are pulling for the main character all the way to win in ways you would not have thought from just looking at the cover!

Great read...enjoy!
I hated for this story to end. The author developed the characters to be real and complex. Although baseball is the backdrop, the story holds many shades of human behavior that go quite deep, way beyond the sport. The author's intimate knowledge of baseball, journalism and law careers, combined with his descriptive characters and situations made this a very interesting read.
Loved this book. It draws you into the lives of people you feel you know. Well written and felt at home. Philly and South Jersey references very familiar. I read this on a flight got to Los Angeles. Enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this book very much. It was extremely well-written and flowed easily from one passage to the next, making it a relatively quick and enjoyable read. I found myself looking forward to the next time I would pick it up to continue reading. The author developed the characters so well, giving them breadth and depth, making them interesting and causing me to care about them… so much so that I got a little misty during the tragic parts. The parallel stories of the athlete and the reporter were fascinating in the manner that they were interwoven. Both story lines were compelling. The story is anchored in baseball, but it's about people. Wonderful!
